Jeff Smoker

Remember the gunslinger back in the early 2000s for the Michigan State Spartans? If not, his name was Jeff Smoker, and if you follow Spartan football at all, you’ve heard the name for sure.

Smoker had one of the finest arms in college football back in the day, and Mel Kiper Jr. placed him in the Top 10 on his draft board for senior quarterbacks. Although Smoker came off the board in the sixth round of the 2004 draft, he still made the St. Louis Rams’ squad.

After he made the team though, Harvard graduate Ryan Fitzpatrick displaced him as the third quarterback on the depth chart and tossed Smoker into the world of professional athlete oblivion.

I hadn’t heard about the guy in quite some time, so I thought I would do some research to figure out what he’s up to these days. Apparently, after working his way up to be the starting quarterback for the Nashville Kats of the Arena Football League, Smoker has since moved on to play with the Arizona Rattlers.

Although the season has not started yet, Smoker is listed as the No. 1 QB on the Rattlers’ depth chart after they moved Sherdrick Bonner, an AFL legend, to Chicago.

It wasn’t all easy for Smoker at MSU, though, if you can recall. He was riddled with a substance abuse problem that got him suspended for five games during 2002, and SI even covered his difficult recovery later that year.

Sure, it would have been good to see the Spartan legend drop deep balls to talented wideouts in the NFL, but he has done a more important thing: He has resurrected his life.

While he holds virtually every passing record in Spartans’ history, don’t expect to see him on an NFL sideline anytime soon.

But at least he’s in a place where he can remain away from his once-obsessive substance problems.

Dylan Favre Record!

Brett Favre’s nephew Dylan Favre set a new Mississippi high school football record Friday. The Dylan Favre record was for career touchdown passing. Last night, Favre was 40 for 48, passing 506 yards and earning 6 touchdowns.

40 for 48? Unreal!

Dylan Favre told local press. “It’s a good feeling. But like the other records, I was not excited as I thought I would be. The good thing is this put us in the driver’s seat for a district championship.’’

Favre currently has 108 career touchdown passes and 9,419 passing yards.

St. Stanislaus 42, Greene County 21 LEAKESVILLE Record-setting quarterback Dylan Favre threw six touchdown passes as St. Stanislaus took a 4A Region 8 victory in Leaksville. Favre, the nation's second-ranked statistical prep quarterback, threw TD passes of 44, 8, 17, 13, 7 and 19 yards for the Rock-a-chaws (6-1, 3-0). He had three TD passes in the first quarter.

- Mad Men - Takes Home Best Drama Emmy

AMC serial receives award show’s most anticipated honor

tylized AMC drama “Mad Men” took home the most anticipated honor of the night at Sunday’s Emmy ceremony at the Nokia Theatre, winning for Outstanding Drama Series.

The show, which follows the lives of advertising executives and their families in the 1960s, was up against other popular network and cable dramas, including “Big Love,” “House” and “Lost.”

“Mad Men” writers Kater Gordon and Matthew Weiner took home a golden statuette for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series earlier in the night.

Actors Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss and John Slattery were nominated for Emmys for their roles on the show, but lost to “Breaking Bad’s” Bryan Cranston, “Damages’” Glenn Close and “Lost’s” Michael Emerson,” respectively. Director Phil Abraham lost to “ER” director Rod Holcomb.

Emmys 2009: ‘Grey Gardens’ and “Saddam’ Win Top Statuettes

The television movie and miniseries categories handed out their awards. Shohreh Aghdashloo won an Emmy for outstanding supporting actress for her portrayal of Sajida Khairallah Talfah in the HBO miniseries “House of Saddam.” Ken Howard earned an outstanding supporting actor award for his role as Phelan Beale in HBO’s “Grey Gardens.” Keeping up with the Kanye West jabs, Howard kept his acceptance speech short “in the hope that it won’t be interrupted by a congressman or a rapper.” Brendan Gleeson won the award for best actor for “Into The Storm” and Jessica Lange won the best actress award for “Grey Gardens.” The award for outstanding television movie went to HBO’s “Grey Gardens,” while PBS’s “Little Dorrit” won for best miniseries.

Toni Collette, Kristin Chenoweth, Jon Cryer early Emmy Award winners

LOS ANGELES - Toni Collette, who plays a mother with multiple personalities on Showtime's "United States of Tara," was honoured as best actress in a comedy series at Sunday's Emmy Awards.

"Wow, this is insanely confronting," said a beaming Collette. She thanked series creator Diablo Cody, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of "Juno."

Collette's victory deprived Tina Fey of "30 Rock" of winning a second consecutive award in the category. But Fey took the stage a few moments later to acknowledge a guest actor award she received for her Sarah Palin impersonation on "Saturday Night Live."

Kristin Chenoweth of "Pushing Daisies" and Jon Cryer of "Two and a Half Men" won supporting acting Emmy Awards for their comedies and proved that acceptance speeches can be entertaining.

"I'm not employed now so I'd like to be on 'Mad Men.' I also like 'The Office' and '24,"' said Chenoweth, alternating between tears and smiles as she accepted for her cancelled ABC series. "Thank you so much to the academy for recognizing a show that's no longer on the air."

Cryer, named best supporting actor for "Two and a Half Men," the most-watched comedy on TV, brought a wry tone to his speech.

"I used to think that awards were just shallow tokens of momentary popularity, but now I realize they are the only true measure of a person's worth as a human being," Cryer said.

Host Neil Patrick Harris started the evening on a lively note, performing "Don't Touch That Remote," a custom-made tune from Broadway composers Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman of "Hairspray" fame. Harris implored viewers to stay glued to the show and called attention to some of the stars in the house.

"I see legends galore, Lange, Barrymore," Harris sang to Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore, later adding, "But like next season on 'Idol' I'm not seeing Paula Abdul." Meanwhile, the camera panned to an empty seat at the Nokia Theatre.

In a bid to give viewers a reason to stick with the show, CBS put advisories of upcoming moments, including Justin Timberlake's appearance as a presenter.

"Mad Men" had the chance for a second consecutive best-drama trophy. Potential trailblazer "Family Guy" was the first animated series to vie for the best comedy award since a 1961 bid by "The Flintstones."

The Fox show was up against last year's winner, actress-writer Fey's "30 Rock," trying for its third consecutive award in the category. The TV academy, meanwhile, hoped to avoid an unwanted rerun at the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards: paltry viewership. The 2008 ceremony was the least-watched ever with an audience of 12.3 million.

Acclaimed but low-rated series like AMC's retro 1960s show "Mad Men" are seen as one reason viewers bypassed the awards, so major categories were expanded to increase the odds for more popular fare. There were as many as seven nominees per category, compared with the traditional five.

Rising network star Jim Parsons of CBS' "The Big Bang Theory" made the cut for best comedy series actor, but niche premium cable shows including HBO's "Flight of the Conchords" and Showtime's "Weeds" grabbed a hefty share of nods.

TV's most-watched comedy, CBS' "Two and a Half Men," failed to score a best series bid, although stars Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer were up for awards.

Fox's "American Idol," the most-watched show, tries to earn its first reality competition show Emmy against dominant winner CBS' "The Amazing Race."

Harris and Emmy executive producer Don Mischer promised to keep the scheduled three-hour ceremony snappy, but they had less room to manoeuvre than planned. A TV academy proposal to pre-tape some acceptances and show them in a truncated version - gaining time for something more entertaining than speeches - was quashed by industry opposition.

Harris also was a supporting actor nominee for "How I Met Your Mother." Others competing for Emmy gold included Bryan Cranston of AMC's "Breaking Bad" and Glenn Close of FX's "Damages," the 2008 winners for best drama series leads.

"Mad Men" stars Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss were among their competition.

HBO went into the ceremony as the awards leader after last weekend's Creative Arts Primetime Emmys ceremony for technical and other achievements. The channel earned 16 trophies, followed by NBC with 11 and Fox and ABC with eight awards each. CBS, PBS and Cartoon Network had six each.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck was taken to the locker room after going down for several minutes following a hard hit late in the second quarter against the San Francisco 49ers.

Hasselbeck was hurt with 26 seconds left before halftime Sunday when linebacker Patrick Willis stuck him in the back as the QB was trying to dive for the end zone and was stopped at the 1-yard line. Hasselbeck got up and was wobbly as he made his way to the sideline, where he fell to his knees and was quickly swarmed by Seattle coaches and trainers.

Backup Seneca Wallace came in on the next play and threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Julius Jones to pull Seattle within 13-10.

5 children, woman found dead in Fla. apartment

Five young children and their mother were found dead in a Florida apartment, and authorities were searching Sunday for the woman's husband, who had left the country.

Mesac Damas, 33, boarded a flight to Haiti from Miami International Airport on Friday, said Collier County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Michelle Batten. Damas has family from Haiti, she said. Sheriff's officials said they want to talk to Damas, who is a person of interest.

Haitian police spokesman Frantz Lerebours could not immediately be reached for comment. A message was also left with the FBI.

The victims were identified as Guerline Damas, 32, and her children: Michzach, 9; Marven, 6; Maven, 5; Megan, 3; and 11-month-old Morgan. Batten would not say how they died.

Family members contacted authorities Thursday saying they hadn't heard from the mother. A missing person report was filed the next day, and on Saturday, the sheriff's office entered the home in a gated community in Naples and found the bodies, Batten said.

Sheriff Rambosk called the homicides "the worst of the worst."

Damas left Miller's Ale House in Naples, where he worked as a cook, Thursday night. He arrived at the Miami airport Friday morning and boarded a flight to Haiti, the sheriff's office said. His car was found at the airport and had been secured by investigators who are checking it for evidence.

The man's father, Jean Damas Sr., told the Naples Daily News that his son had called his brother from Haiti. Damas Sr. also said his son and his wife have had domestic problems. A phone message left Sunday by the Associated Press for Damas Sr. was not immediately returned.

Collier County court records show Mesac Damas has prior charges for domestic violence against his wife. A 2005 charge was dismissed after a hearing.

Naked man, 91, holds drunken intruder at gunpoint

Authorities said a naked 91-year-old man was able to hold a drunken intruder at gunpoint until deputies arrived. Robert E. Thompson jumped out of bed early Saturday when his dog starting growling and attacking the intruder. He said he got his revolver and went out back to let the guy know how he felt about home invaders.

Thompson, a World War II veteran, said he didn't even notice he was standing outside in the dark without any clothes on.

Authorities arrived to find a drunk intruder being held outside by a naked homeowner.

The 26-year-old intruder was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on a burglary charge.

Death of A Cheerleader Angela Delvecchio

Angela Delvecchio – Pics of the real Angela Delvecchio portrayed in Death Of A Cheerleader, Bernadette Protti, and her 1984 murder victim, Kirsten Costas.

The Angela Delvecchio character is based on Bernadette Protti

The Angela Delvecchio character played by Kellie Martin is actually the opposite of Bernadette Protti – who was older, taller and blonde - while Kirsten Costas, played by Tori Spelling – was only 15, shorter and dark-haired.

Bernadette Protti was the basis for the Delvecchio character

The Kirsten Costas murder story that was the basis for Death Of A Cheerleader was published in Rolling Stone in 1985 and was also covered by People magazine.

Bernadette Protti basically killed Kirsten Costas over an imagined slight and fear of being exposed as a scheming, socially inept wannabe.

Kirsten Costas was the murdered cheerleader

As in the movie, where the Angela Delvecchio character pretended for months not to know who stabbed the young cheerleader to death, Bernadette Protti did the same for six months before finally confessing.

Unbelievably, and over the protests of Kristin Costas’ family, Bernadette Protti was paroled from California prison after just seven years.

Rihanna to Blast Brown on LP

Rihanna en''enojado''pistas says it is working for his new album, which could be spent on her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, who assaulted her.

Rihanna is set to blast ex-boyfriend Chris Brown in his new songs.

The singer of "Umbrella" is still to talk about his uneasy relationship with the 20-year-old singer - who recently pleaded guilty to assaulting her and was sentenced to probation for five years and six months of community work -- for the first time in a track from his upcoming album.

Ne-Yo, who is working with 21 years as a singer on the album, said: "Wait a sharp, Rihanna, almost indignant in this case. Rihanna says some things about this album you've never heard before."

Rihanna is thought might be planning to sing about the assault, or violence that marred the relationship.

Court documents have revealed that the couple were involved in at least two other types of domestic violence incidents before the match in February, during which Chris punched, kicked and strangled in her car Rihanna.

Akon is also working with the beauty of pop in their new songs, but has no interest in appearing in any of its dark themes.

He said: "I have to say anything, but I will work on as many songs as possible with her. I'm going to clear him up. I do not want an angry Rihanna.

In May, he claimed Rihanna has written a song about the death of a cheating partner at the time of the assault.

It was called 'Emergency Room', and was a woman who dreams of revenge for his hospitalising unfaithful partner.

Lyrics include: "I'll leave the broken heart on the floor / You're gonna be in the emergency room / I'm standing by the bed / And so the temptation to take out his IV."

It has been argued February between Chris and Rihanna began after she was angry that he had received a text message from an ex-girlfriend.

Keanu Reeves in the prisons of New York

Keanu Reeves in the prisons of New York, where federal authorities can not go

BUFFALO, NY - Actor Keanu Reeves had no problem getting into Buffalo-area jails. The feds have not been so lucky.

The star of "The Matrix movie trilogy last weekend scouting locations for a new movie. His visit included visits to two jail facilities, which are the target of a lawsuit the U.S. Justice Department accused Sheriff's Department to Erie County civil rights violations of human rights.

County officials have barred federal investigators from prison, but Reeves was given visits to the facility on Sunday.

Then county officials said Reeves should not have allowed in prisons.

Reeves was looking at possible locations for the film "The Crime of Henry," which casts him as a toll worker unjustly accused of robbing a bank in Buffalo.

Dan Brown returns after 6 years of waiting

NEW YORK - Dan Brown's mind can be a set of codes, but no person who appears to be more mysterious than her tennis partner average. It is the smile, sandy-haired man with a dimpled chin you know from the lapel of "The Da Vinci Code," the boy sport jacket and pants.

After six years of not doing their job - a conversation that spoke softly and cried throughout the world - is back, at least briefly, to promote his new novel, "The Lost Command" and to reflect on how " The Da Vinci Code "transformed him from an unknown writer thriller symbol in its own right.

"I would not change it for anything," he says, sitting on a recent morning in a sunlit room at the headquarters of Random House, Inc. "It's great for 95 percent. My life is much more multifaceted. My experiences have become much more interesting, the people who come to meet, the conversations that get to have. "

The book is done and you do as a parent, "very happy this day has come." Your editor has blessed "The Lost Command", with an initial circulation of 5 million, large for almost any writer, except Brown, whose sales of "The Da Vinci Code" top 40 million. "The Lost symbol" has been at or near the top of Amazon.com 's best-selling novel has been announced in the spring.

The long wait for his new book, he says, is mainly due to the story, "mindboggling things, that takes time to master. In "The Lost Symbol," protagonist Robert Langdon returns from his European adventure of "The Da Vinci Code." He has been summoned to Washington, DC, and is quickly caught in a fateful race against a villainous murderer to find a secret code that supposedly discovers an ancient secret of unlimited knowledge and power.

Like "The Da Vinci Code," the new book is thriller, puzzles, research work and travel. Langdon is precipitated on the Library of Congress to the National Archives to the Washington Monument, a capsule Brown took trips to work in the novel, who travel first class all the way, as the reception staff travel Library of Congress and other buildings.

"Those things would not have happened if not for 'The Da Vinci Code'" he says.

Library spokesman Matt Raymond confirmed that Brown had visited in April 2008 and had looked in some Bibles in the library collection. He also met for about 30 minutes with the Librarian of Congress James Billington, to the debate a "private".

Unwonderful Fama 5 percent is the kind that other prominent people face: a loss of intimacy that makes it impossible for Mr Brown said the tour of his new book, be aware that briefly, a couple of months, he says, makes it difficult for him to write "The Lost Symbol".

He was also delayed for infringing copyright 2006 trial in which writers Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh said Brown's book "appropriated the architecture" of their own work. Brown and Random House prevailed.

"That was certainly a setback, especially since it was a distraction and all that energy that goes into a trial is not in their job," he says. "The worst thing was that someone question my integrity, publicly."

It was often attacked by "The Da Vinci Code," especially for claiming that Jesus and Mary Magdalene conceived a child. The students mocked him, and the religious officials were outraged, but Brown insists his theory, finding that "makes more sense than the story I was told in church."

Brown's new book focuses on Freemasonry, the secret, centuries-old fraternity that has included George Washington, Teddy Roosevelt and Harry Truman. He has a great respect for the Freemasons, especially by its policy of accepting people of all faiths. But he would not be surprised if someone gets angry.

"There will be plenty, he said, not everything will be nice," he says. "And I'm just kind of used to it."

He does not speak much to reporters, but Brown's story is as familiar as most authors, thanks in part to a mini-biography that never wanted to produce - a 69-page document filed in the court's trial London.

Born in 1964 in Exeter, New Hampshire, and still lives nearby. His father, Richard Brown, taught mathematics at Phillips Exeter Academy. His mother, Constance Brown, was a musician. The first treasure hunt I knew were those of his father organized for Christmas.

Brown majored in English at Amherst College, but she also liked the music enough to the debate after graduation if I should write stories or songs. Selection of songs, he moved to Los Angeles and caught on with anyone except for the woman who became his wife, Blythe Newlon, director of artistic development of the National Academy of Songwriters.

When I was young, he compiled a list of "187 Men to Avoid" which was quite fun for Berkeley Publishing Group to release a book in 1995 under the pseudonym "Danielle Brown". But his real breakthrough came two years ago on a vacation in Tahiti, when he read Sidney Sheldon "The Doomsday Conspiracy."

"It kept my attention, kept me turning pages, and reminded me how fun it can be to read," Brown wrote in his court papers. "The simplicity of the prose and the efficiency of the story line was less cumbersome than the dense novels of my schooldays, and I began to suspect that maybe I could write a thriller of this type one day."

He debuted in 1998 with "Digital Fortress, the thriller" an intelligence and followed with "Deception Point" (a novel bored to write) and "Angels and Demons", which presents at least a few readers to Langdon, the Harvard's incarnate teacher descriptions for many of Tom Hanks in the movie version of "The Da Vinci Code" and "Angels and Demons".

Its sales were poor, and in 2001 was in the same routine as so many authors - handling its own advertising and even selling books of his car, a process that now requires a convoy of trucks.

Brown changed agents, he changed publishers (Simon & Schuster Doubleday, a Random House imprint), their luck changed and changed the industry. "The Da Vinci Code," published in March 2003 was an instant hit that "just parked," says Brown, staying in the best-seller lists for over three years. He recalls an early sign of success - an appearance at a supermarket in Washington, not longer after the book came out.

"We went up and the tent was surrounded by people, and I thought, 'My God, there must have been a bomb threat. What are all these people?" And my manager said, 'These people are here for you. And maybe that's when I thought, 'This is bigger than I expected "."

Barnes & Noble, Inc. fiction buyer Sessalee Hensley says she knew vaguely from Brown before "The Da Vinci Code," but had never read. Encouraged by an executive of Barnes & Noble, to discuss Brown's novel was immediately drawn to the rhythm of "Breathless, intrigue - science and art were fascinating.

"But I must say that my biggest to take it was that I wanted to know more about everything he wrote about," says Hensley. "I searched on Google for my fingers off! It made me wish I had Robert Langdon and Dan Brown as a professor in my college years!"

Brown is much richer than it was several years ago, but his life's work remains stable, he says. He rises at 4 am and write until noon, seven days a week, even at Christmas. He is often too exhausted to read, so instead he will play tennis or go jogging on the beach. The religious criticism of Mark Twain, "Letters from Earth" is one of the few books I've read for pleasure lately.

Brown talk and talk about Twain, the Masons, the pyramids of spirituality ( "a work in progress," he says) and e-books (read them, and the type of paper, too), but some issues repel as if they were asked to violate a sacred oath. Ask about his upcoming book and he smiles, in a pleasant manner, and change the subject. Ask about the policy, and he revolted.

"The Lost" do not give names, but works in the criticism of waterboarding and religious intolerance, the passages that suggest the author was not a fan of the administration of George W. Bush.

"People who have read the book have told me that seems preordained when the book," he says. "And they will include, among other information, the president (Obama) and the change in attitudes toward religion."

Asked if the book was completed after the election of Obama, he replies thoughtfully, yes. Asked his opinion of Obama, is refusing comment, the very future of his book.

"What I'm trying to do in this book is to send a universal message, and the second volume firstly, it undermines everything," he says, adding that he underwent a "transformation" work in "The Lost Symbol."

"(It) really two things. The idea that science is beginning to show our true potential and that potential is much larger than most of us imagined. ... Tangentially, I feel we are entering an era where the prejudices, the prejudices of religion, in particular, begins to evaporate. "

Del Potro stuns Federer in U.S. Open Final

NEW YORK - Normally, so cold, so coherent, so in control of their emotions and their matches, Roger Federer to miss the U.S. Open Championship of reach. Two points from victory against experience, unheralded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, two points for a sixth straight title at Flushing Meadows and a record 16th Grand Slam extend generally Federer simply collapsed on Monday.

He criticized the umpire. His legs were tired. His double faults mounted. I could not find a way to stop the 6-foot-6 del Potro of hits forehand after forehand with him. In a surprising result for those who lost, how it happened, the sixth-seeded Del Potro came back to win his first Grand Slam title by changing the No. 1-Federer 3-6, 7-6 (5), 4 - 6, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

"You can not have them all," Federer said.

He had won 40 consecutive matches at Flushing Meadows. He had won 33 of his last 34 Grand Slam matches. And he has made the finals in 17 of the last 18 Grand Slam tournaments, 21 in general.

Del Potro? This was the age of 20 years, the first Grand Slam final, and was 0-6 against Federer so far. But after handing over Rafael Nadal, the largest single loss of his career in a Grand Slam in the semifinals on Sunday, Del Potro came back the next day and Federer nervous.

As of Monday, Federer was 2-5 in Grand Slam finals against his nemesis, Nadal, and 13-0 against everyone else. Somehow, the colt never seemed intimidated by the creation or the man who many consider the best tennis player in history.

The unflappable Federer usually discuss with chair umpire Jake Garner during a transition, with a profanity and saying, "Do not tell me my street, okay?" When I talk, talk. "

Del Potro, meanwhile, got his life when young, high-fiving the front row of fans after winning a point, and reveling in football, serenades the style of "Ole!" ringing through the stadium.

The party of 4 hours, 6 minutes was the first U.S. Open final to go five sets since 1999, and there was no initial signs indicate that this competition would be - much less end Del Potro, with his back, gasping, tears, a Grand Slam trophy before being in his arms. He is the first man from Argentina to win the U.S. Open since Guillermo Vilas in 1977.

Vilas was in the stands Monday, sitting a row behind Jack Nicklaus.

A simple indication of the difference in age and state of the two finalists: The 28-year-old Federer scoreboard was filled with friends as a couple of rock stars Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, and Vogue editor Anna Wintour sat next to Federer's parents, wife and agent. Only three of the 15 available seats were occupied at the table Potro.

Federer took a 3-0 lead in 15 minutes, earning one point for the careers of about 5 meters wide of the doubles alley for a defensive setback, then sprint away for a passing forehand cross-court winner that held shouting and shaking fists.

Even had time to watch a replay on a video screen in the stadium. That is not "What truth?"! "Kind of trick shot Federer pulled against Novak Djokovic in the semifinals - a return to the network, between-the-legs, cross-section passing winner to reach match point - but very dramatic, however.

But Del Potro finally be moving more freely and take full advantage of Federer's service woes: 11 double faults and a first class service percentage of only 50.

Used to travel without a coach full time, in general, Federer is very adept at matching the middle of the settings and switches deal with opponents in the strategy. But it was Del Potro, who realized he needed to make fully convinced of the strength of his forehand 100 kilometers per hour and not worry much.

That tactic worked, and Federer never found a way to fight it, lose your head in the second and the fourth set. He rose from 5-4 in the fourth, and 15-30 in Del Potro's serve, Federer needs only two more points to become the first man since Bill Tilden in 1920-25 to win the American Grand Slam tournament of six years in a row.

Del Potro was kept there, and Federer would never come that close again.

Patrick Swayze dies at 57

- Patrick Swayze, Hunky actor who danced his way into the hearts of viewers with "Dirty Dancing" and then broke with "Ghost," died on Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.

"Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of her illness during the past 20 months," said a statement issued last night by his publicist, Annett Wolf. No other details were given.

Fans of the actor was saddened to learn in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from a particularly deadly form of cancer.

He had continued working despite the diagnosis, putting together a memory book with his wife and the shooting of "The Beast", a drama series for A & E had already done the pilot. It drew a respectable 1.3 million viewers when the 13 episodes ran in 2009, but A & E said he had reluctantly decided not to renew for a second season.

Swayze says he chose not to use painkillers while "The Beast" because it would have taken the edge off his performance. He acknowledged that the time might be running in response to the severe nature of the disease.

The first time I went public with the disease, some reports were given only weeks to live, but her doctor told her that her situation was "considerably more optimistic" than that.

Thought I'd say five years is pretty optimistic, "Swayze told ABC's Barbara Walters, in early 2009. "Two years seems likely that if you will believe the statistics. I want to last until they find a cure, which means it will be better than a fire underneath it."

The three-time Golden Globe nominee, Swayze became a star with his performance as the misunderstood bad boy Johnny Castle in Dirty Dancing. "As the son of a choreographer who began his career in musical theater, it seemed natural for the role.

A coming-of-age romance starring Jennifer Gray as an idealistic young man vacationing with his family and instructor Swayze as sexy (and much older than the Catskills resort's) dance, the film made extensive use of his grace, both on their feet and muscular fitness.

It became an international phenomenon in the summer of 1987, spawning albums, an Oscar-winning song "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", theater productions and a 2004 sequel "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights "which made a cameo.
